New Paint Finishes on MDF for Summer 2022

Estimated reading time: 6 minutes

There is no doubt that dark, vibrant, and bold painted cabinet colours have gained popularity in 2021 and continue to climb in 2022, but are they here to stay? The Superior Cabinets Portfolio and Design team believes they are, and they are excited to introduce four new painted finishes on MDF for Summer 2022.

The Kitchen Design Experts at Superior Cabinets described Fusion Stillwater as “the perfect green-blue cabinet colour.” Fusion Stillwater has the ideal balance of deep green with a subtle touch of blue, heavily influenced by turquoise and teal hues.

Imagine the richest deep dark green tone from the ocean, and you have described Fusion Rockwood. This colour shows the lush green undertone in spaces with bright natural light, much like a deep dark emerald green. In rooms with dimmer lighting, this colour will almost resemble charcoal black, with the deep green going undetected.

Fusion Zinc is a luxurious dark charcoal grey with a slight green undertone reminiscent of dark seawater. The trend-spotters at Superior Cabinets predict that Fusion Zinc will be popular for islands, fireplace mantles and surrounds, and living room built-ins. Fusion Zinc is similar to Iron Ore [SW 7069], the March 2022 colour of the month by Sherwin-Williams.

Fusion Carbon is an excellent alternative to matte black, with a deep blue tint. It’s a soft and sophisticated black that you must see in person, as pictures do not do this colour justice. The Superior Cabinets Kitchen Desing Experts predict that Fusion Carbon could be the perfect blue-black cabinet colour for those who love dark paint finishes on MDF.

As matte cabinet finishes continue to grow in popularity with homeowners, designers, renovators, and builders, these four new painted finishes on MDF are exclusively offered in a matte sheen/finish. The Kitchen Design Experts at Superior Cabinets noticed a shift in demand for matte low-lustre finishes, from higher sheen finishes, back in 2018. This flat matte look offers the high-end feeling homeowners desire, perfect for absorbing light rather than refracting it.

Matte or reduced sheen finishes became extremely popular for wood-stained cabinets in 2019, which motivated Superior Cabinets to redevelop and transition their entire wood collection, taking the top coat sheen to 10%, down from 20%. Read more on the Advantages of Reduced Sheen on Wood.

Door Style Options: The Kitchen Design Experts at Superior Cabinets would recommend either the Chicago or the Darby [Slim Shaker Shaker] door patterns. Realistically any of the One-Piece Door Styles by Superior Cabinets would look amazing with these new colours. Consider any MDF Five Piece Flat Panel door for a more detailed and premium look if your budget permits.

Countertop Pairings:  These painted colours are incredibly versatile for countertop paring options. Lighter to mid-tone quartz with delicate veining, such as Calacatta Extra by Hanstone Quartz, would be a safe and beautiful option.

New for spring 2022, the new Paint Finishes on MDF Stillwater, Rockwood, Zinc, and Carbon by Superior Cabinets pair with Calacatta Extra by Hanstone Quartz and Arabetto by Caesarstone.

For those looking to make a bold statement with their countertops, consider choosing the nature-inspired quartz Arabetto by Caesarstone, which features stunning grey stripes and interlacing lines on a crisp white background.

Either Knobs or Handles will perfectly complement these new painted finishes, but it would be difficult to make an incorrect decision. Consider pairing them with Matte Black, Chrome, Graphite, or Brushed Nickel hardware finishes.

Anything in the Gold family could also work well for these new paint finishes on MDF, especially in areas with accent cabinetry such as a built-in hutch, credenza, entertainment unit, home office desk, or bathroom vanity. See the Choosing Decorative Hardware Blog if you are stuck in indecision and aren’t sure where to begin with choosing decorative cabinet handles.
