Kitchen Trends for 2019

SHIPLAP

With the desire to get that cottage feel, the use of horizontal shiplap embellishments started to become a kitchen cabinet trend in 2018. For those that are all-in on this look, it can be incorporated by adding tailored shiplap wall applications using paint-grade wood materials. For those looking for a more subtle effect, try adding some shiplap detailing to the back and sides of your kitchen island.

WIRE BRUSHED MDF CABINETS

[UPDATE] PLEASE NOTE:  Superior Cabinets no longer carries Wire Brushed MDF Cabinets. Please see the full Painted MDF Collection here.

With our hugely successful launch of our new Fusion Evolution on MDF in November 2018, it is safe to say that painted Wire Brushed MDF cabinets are hot on the cabinetry trends list for 2019. Available in over 30 on-trend painted finishes, this collection is an industry game-changer as wire brushing in cabinetry used to be reserved strictly for Oak or Rift-Cut Oak cabinets. With the success of this launch, you can be sure there are more surprises planned for the Fusion Evolution Collection on MDF. Again, Superior Cabinets no longer carries the Fusion Evolution Wire Brushed MDF Cabinets

HOOD FANS

Whether it be for style or ventilation, it’s clear that the gourmet kitchen of 2019 will most likely have a decorative wood hood or a canopy hood fan appliance, often in stainless steel. The Over the Range Microwave (OTR) dominated this precious focal point for many years and now we are seeing this unsightly appliance as a kitchen cabinet trend to avoid. Canopy hood fans also add for a great user experience, as this allows more clearance above the range, perfect for those at home chefs that love to flip food in a pan.

BLACK

If you thought black was out, think again. Black accents started to come on the scene in 2015 and 2016, with the trend moving towards the industrial look. The industrial look is often injected with pipe fitting embellishments as shelf brackets and other accessories. Black accents were all the rage in trending kitchens of 2018 and this will most definitely carry forward and grow heading into 2019. We’re seeing this in cabinetry hardware, sinks, contrasting cabinets, island stools, and even canopy hood fans.

GEOMETRY

Kitchens nowadays are all about geometry, which is often expressed in backsplash wall tile. Octagon and Hexagon tiles have seen a rapid increase in popularity and are hard to avoid. Our trend-spotters have even noticed some trapezoid shaped tiles making an appearance. Many theorize that geometric shapes are pleasing to people because of the Golden Ratio, a common mathematical ratio often found in nature that can be used to create pleasing, natural looking compositions in your design work. Either way, people like shapes, and shapes can have a huge impact on our behavior.
