Mudroom Design
Designer: Shahan Fancy
Location: SaskatoonAsk any Kitchen Designer about one of the most exciting and challenging areas to design in a home and they’ll probably mention Mud Rooms. Don’t get me wrong, kitchen design is still very exciting, but there’s nothing like working on a challenging opportunity in a smaller limited space, where functionality and lifestyle is essential.

How to use your closet to make your morning great!!!!
Designer: Marina Arthur
Location: SaskatoonYou know how they say men are from Mars and women are from Venus, well the same may apply when it comes to clothing storage. Men’s and women’s needs can be very different in terms of hanging vs. folding, pants vs. dresses and shoes vs. t-shirts... the ratios of each of these as well as sizes of the spaces allocated to them.

Base cabinets vs Cabinets with doors
Designer: Ken Schauerte
Location: SaskatoonWhat is the benefit to using drawers in my base cabinets vs. cabinets with doors?
Drawers in the kitchen are always a plus. Although they may cost a bit more, the capacity of a cabinet with drawers far exceeds the capacity of a cabinet of the same size with doors. You can load a drawer to the top, and still be able to see all the contents without having to move contents
to get at what you need. The function of a drawer cabinet is greater as well. In one motion you pull your drawer open to access contents without much difficulty. A cabinet with doors limits access; therefore you may often have to bend down onto your knees to access your stored items, especially in the back of the bottom shelf. Although drawers provide better functionality in your kitchen,
you may still want to use base cabinets with doors for aesthetic appeal or budget. I would recommend however that you include at least one or two full banks of drawers. I would like to include an island in my kitchen for additional work space and storage. -
Latest design trends
Designer: Coren Jones
Location: Calgary EastWhat do you recommend regarding using the latest design trends when planning a new kitchen?
Most elements in design have trends. When planning a new kitchen, determine which current trends appeal to your design style and functional needs. Steer away from daring trends that are not easy to change in a year or two, such as bold coloured countertop or cabinets. If you want to make a statement, use a daring paint colour on your walls as this can be easily altered to adapt to changing fashions. Kitchens are personal and unless you are thinking of selling your home within a year or two, plan your kitchen to suite your taste, and your lifestyle and not necessarily the latest trend. Get others’ opinions and use them as a guide for your own kitchen, but make sure you include pieces of yourself in your decision. Look through magazines to get ideas. Gather pictures and make a list of what you like. Sometimes a list of things you do not want can be helpful to a Kitchen Designer as well. A Kitchen Designer can be a great help in your kitchen planning process as they will guide you through the decision making stages and assist with the details that can sometimes be overwhelming.
