Clients are always looking for ways to increase their options for seating in their kitchens. There are many ways of doing this, and adding a kitchen island is the easiest way to increase your options for seating. The amount of design options for kitchen islands are almost unlimited. Adding an island will not only better serve you for seating and function, it will increase the value of your kitchen.
Before you begin, you need to think about how you want to use your island before finalizing your design. Do you require more storage space? Do you require more countertop space? How much seating do you require? What kind of kitchen accessories would you like to incorporate? Answering these questions, you will help you on your journey.
After this you can create a floor pattern or template made of cardboard to simulate the kitchen island space. This will allow you to not only visualize your future island, but also to ensure the correct placement of the island. From here you have the opportunity to ensure there is enough room for you to maneuver in your space. You will need ample room from the other countertops, the refrigerator door and handle, dishwasher and oven. Typically 36” is the bare minimun clearance between countertops and appliances to your island. Often leaving additional room (39”- 45”) between appliances and your new island is most advantageous.
Once you know your space and how much space you have to work with, it’s time to find a solution.
1) Prefabricated Island: Often you can find RTA (Ready to Assemble) options at your local home building supply store, like IKEA, Home Hardware, Home Depot, Lowe’s, Rona, Etc. These are all boxed and ready to go and come in various sizes, shapes and materials. They are a fantastic option for those that are looking for a quick solution that doesn’t have to match the rest of your kitchen. The other advantage is that they are typically cost effective, movable and on castors for the ultimate convenience.
2) Custom or Semi-custom Island: This is great if you are looking to have some creative control with your new island. Here you can work with a kitchen designer to get a result that is perfect for your home, space and lifestyle. This is a great solution if you are a bit more patient and willing to go through the design process and fabrication times to get exactly what you want (space and budget permitting).
