What to do While You’re Without a Kitchen

Renovation Help

While renovating your kitchen here are a few tips on how to keep life sane in a house without a kitchen and no room service.

1st and foremost let all your friends and relatives know that you will be without your kitchen for several weeks so they can invite you over for dinner. Make sure you return the favor when they renovate theirs’; as they surely will after seeing the great results of yours.

Set up an area that acts as a temporary kitchen. Include an area for cooking and prep with a microwave, a toaster oven, and even a hot plate if that’s something you’ll have. Also have out a big cutting board for making sandwiches and cutting fruit as this dirties very few dishes.  Make sure you keep your old refrigerator in the temporary kitchen area. Cleaning up after meals with no sink and likely no DW can be difficult so use paper plates where possible. While not environmentally friendly it is temporary.

To minimize the need for takeout food, plan ahead and pre-make meals you can that prepare in the microwave or regular oven (try to keep your stove plugged in during the renovation). This is also a good way to use up some of the food in your cabinets before packing it all up into boxes.

Buy easier/ ready made things at the grocer like pre-washed salad & pre-seasoned meat to cook on your indoor grill or weather permitting BBQ.

While all this planning is great, eating out is an option you will definitely partake of. This is an opportunity to try some new restaurants in town.

Finally just keep calm and carry on. It will be over soon and you will love your new space.
