ED Feehan High School Construction Technology Course – Building a Kitchen

Around Superior

To continue the story of our students from the ED Feehan High School Construction Technology Course, published on April 8th, 2014, where the students from ED Feehan participated in designing a kitchen for their upcoming RTM Home.

In Mid-May 2014, the students from the ED Feehan High School Construction Technology Course continued their kitchen journey and spent one week at the Superior Cabinets Manufacturing Center of Excellence in Saskatoon.

“The primary focus was to get the students involved in every touch point of their job.” – JASON WARKENTIN – DIRECTOR OF MANUFACTURING, SUPERIOR CABINETS

Because of the student’s hands-on training through the ED Feehan Construction Technology program, they were able to take part in the actual building construction of their kitchen.  The students already had critical training such as WHMIS, Health and Safety, Hand Tools Orientation and PPE Personal Protective Equipment Orientation training.  With the students already having most of these essential training requirements, this expedited the orientation process and got them on the shop floor almost immediately.

The week was spent in the manufacturing plant, overseeing and getting involved with the construction of the kitchen for their upcoming Ready to Move (RTM) home.  The students participated in all areas of manufacturing, including: Receiving, Cutting, Finishing, Inspection, Assembly and Packaging.  They used a “buddy system” which partnered each student with a Superior Cabinets Supervisor/Leader for each essential task.  This way each part of the manufacturing process could be managed and explained as they went through piece by piece.

“Our employees are proud of their work and our facility, seeing the impact on the Superior Team while working with the students, hand in hand, was just as valuable as the building the kitchen itself.” – JASON WARKENTIN – DIRECTOR OF MANUFACTURING, SUPERIOR CABINETS

One of the many success stories of this program is Superior Cabinets employee and Flatline Operator, Ben, who was a previous student of the ED Feehan High School Construction Technology Course.  Ben is now a valued fulltime member of the Superior Team and holds a position in the finishing department as a Flatline Operator.  Ben is a shining example of the tangible benefits of this great program.

The experience for the students at Superior Cabinets was made possible through the leadership of Scott Hahn of ED Feehan High School and John Povhe of Superior Cabinets working together to enhance the education program and expose the students to a work class manufacturer.
