Facts About New Homes in Western Canada

  • In new residential construction, spaces are getting smaller.
  • There is a demand for more multi-family construction (apartment condos, townhouse condos) and mixed-use multi-family projects.
  • Housing affordability is an increasing issue.
  • There is an increased need of multi-generational homes in Western Canada.
  • There are less “zones” in homes today.  Ex: No formal dining room and open concept designs.

Questions to Ask When Designing a Small Space

We’ve put together some easy questions to ask when planning a small space, as there is no point in making a dysfunctional space look pretty.

Function Questions: Start with Function first and then work on the Style

  • Do I need this space or solution to serve multiple functions?
  • What can’t I live without? What do I really need? Appliances? Storage items?  Make a “must have” list.
  • Am I willing to spend more for multi-function?
  • Is there any overhead space or void space areas I can take advantage of?  Ex: Don’t forget about the back of a passage door.
  • Can I eliminate any angles? (Angles are a budget killer)
  • Will these materials/finishes stand the test of time?

Style Questions:

  • Do you know your style?  Or do you at least know what you don’t like?
  • Can I get more things off of the counter?
  • Can I incorporate some open shelving?
  • Can I mix textures?
