So you want to add that basement bar you have always dreamed of and you have decided that custom cabinets are the way to go. Basement bars are perfect for those that would like an additional zone for beverage storage in their home. At the most basic level a “bar area” is simply a separate zone to store glassware, alcohol, wine, and any other necessary components to mix the perfect cocktail. Here are our tips for designing the perfect bar.
BAR STYLES
SIMPLE DRY BAR: This can be a simple base or wall cabinet with a bit of storage. If custom cabinets aren’t your thing, consider a beverage or tea cart. This is an easy addition to your home that is less permanent or moveable.
INTERMEDIATE – WET OR DRY BAR: This typically involves some amount of cabinetry and an appliance such as a small bar fridge or wine cooler.
INTERMEDIATE WET BAR: This typically includes all of the above and has a plumbed in sink. Wet bar sinks are typically nice and small and are a single basin.
SOPHISTICATED BAR: This typically includes all of the above and one or all of the following: a tall wine cooler, dishwasher and microwave.
THINGS TO CONSIDER WHEN PLANNING YOUR BAR AREA
Here are some tips, tricks and things to consider if you are in the planning phase of designing your perfect bar area.
INTENDED USAGE:
- Is this simply a storage area?
- Is this an entertainment zone?
- Is this a place to craft perfect cocktails?
PLACEMENT: This is the most important part.
- Where would my ideal bar be located in my home?
STORAGE: Take count of what you would like to store.
- Would I like to display wine?
- Do I require more room for tall bottles?
- Do I want things to be concealed/hidden or exposed?
WET OR DRY:
- Do I require a sink?
APPLIANCES:
- Do you I need an under counter bar fridge or wine cooler?
- Do I need a tall/full size fridge?
- Should I add a microwave?
- Should I consider a dishwasher?
BONUS TIPS
TALL ITEMS: Measure your tallest bottle and work backwards from there. This is especially crucial if you would like your top shelf liquor on display.
BLENDER OR SLUSH MACHINE: Don’t forget to measure the height of your high efficiency blender or your frozen drink machine. These items are typically taller and require more than the standard 18” clearance between the countertop and upper cabinet.
MICROWAVE: Consider adding a microwave in your bar zone for movie night popcorn.
DISHWASHER: This will eliminate any awkward family feuds or dirty dish standoffs. You can thank us later ;-)
OVERFLOW: Bar cabinets can provide excellent overflow storage from your kitchen.
